Greater than 90% of all solar power systems do not include batteries. The basic components for a grid-tied solar power system (without batteries) are as follows:
1. Solar Array: These photovoltaic (PV) panels are usually located on the roof and serve to convert sunlight into electricity.
2. Grid-Tie Inverter: This unit converts the DC power output of the solar array to the AC power required by virtually all household appliances.
3. Bi-directional Utility Meter: A Bidirectional meter is important because if you generate more power than your home needs at that time, the meter will run backwards, sending power to the grid.
Additionally, there is a DC Safety Disconnect between the Solar Panels and the Inverter and an AC Safety Disconnect between the Inverter and the Main Electrical Panel.
How these components come together to form your solar power system is shown nicely on the Sharp Interactive Solar Power Layout (Click on “Solar Energy in Action”)
